Local Area Newspapers

By now many people know that the library has the New York Times on microfilm back to 1851, but what about local coverage of historical news events? Did you know local newspapers are available as far back as 1807? One of our student staff, Kelvin Pressey has worked hard in the past months to create a list of local area newspapers by titles and dates of coverage. 

How will this be useful? Let me give you an example. If you wanted to know what kind of coverage this area gave to the War of 1812, you could use the list to look up the year 1812 and it would tell you that during that time period we have the newspaper “The Hornets’ Nest” on microfilm. You could then come to the library to view the paper to see if the issues available will help you.
